Need help now?Immediate danger — call 911
1. Check safety first
- Immediate danger, not breathing, or possible overdose: call 911. Use naloxone if you have it and know how (naloxone steps).
- They talk about ending their life: call or text 988 with them, or call the Vancouver Island Crisis Line 1-888-494-3888.
- Keep yourself safe too. You can step back and call for help.
2. Ask, don't assume
- "What would help most right now?" — let them choose.
- Use their name, speak calmly, and respect a "no."
- Don't share their story or photos without permission.

Not sure where to start? Dial 211 (BC community services) or 811 (HealthLink BC, health advice).
4. Before you go
- Call services before travelling — hours and beds change.
- Help them write down phone numbers or a private plan.
- Take care of yourself afterward. Grounding tools are here for helpers too.
